Surely, civil engineers could prevent a lot of the misery that flooding inflicts, I am often told. Well, no-one can prevent floods totally, but we can minimise the devastation. And we can safeguard for the future, as civil engineering expertise has shown at Corbridge after a months worth of rain fell in 36 hours and brought havoc to Carlisle and the Tyne Valley early in 2005.
